Imagine this: You get front row seats to your favorite show for FREE. Has this ever happened to you? Whether you answered yes or no, wouldn’t you like it to happen—as often as possible?! Well guess what: It can! That’s what the Sharing Economy is all about.
Two years ago, we were able to spend five weeks in The States exploring the South. It was our first-ever long trip for the four of us. And when the holiday came to its end, the one thing we knew for sure: We wanted—NEEDED—to take these trips as often as possible. But how were we going to make it all happen?
Because the cost of these longer trips can become quite expensive, I knew I had to focus on two things: (1) reducing the cost of these trips and (2) creating extra income to help fund more family travel. If only it were as easy as it sounds! But I wasn’t going to let the weight of it all hold me back. I just knew I had to make it happen—for myself AND my family.
I must admit: When I first heard about home swapping I was really quite skeptical. How could I trust people I’d never met inside our family’s home with all of our prized possessions? Peer was even more critical than I was! Can we trust the people that will stay in our house, sleep in our beds and use all of our facilities? What happens if they’re disappointed? What happens if WE’RE disappointed and the house isn’t as nice as it seems in the pictures? We had so many questions running through our minds.
So first, we started investigating a bit further. Based on all of the positive information and reviews we read, we finally decided to give it a try. I must admit: I was so excited once we finally decided to take the plunge and book our first home swap.
Since our first home exchange, we have now enjoyed nine swaps and we are already booked for the next year! What’s more: It encouraged us to swap it all! From houses to cars and bicycles—we’ve even borrowed other people’s camping gear! Not only does it significantly cut down on the cost, but we meet so many new people with whom we’ve built long-lasting relationships with. It’s so much easier—and SAFER—than it sounds and we SAVE SO MUCH MONEY! It’s one of the many ways we’re able to travel more often and enjoy so much more time together.
So, what do you think about the concept of swapping and sharing homes and equipment? I think you should give it a try! Don’t worry: If you’re not totally convinced yet, I have guides to get started and reviews of which platforms we’re using a why. I promise—you’ll love it!
